Face Oils Explained

“Stop telling me to calm down.” — Your chin.

When your skin is going through some stuff and needs a friend, a good face oil helps relieve dry, hormonal or tired skin. They're the equivalent of a warm bath, doona and reality TV marathon for your face. But we get it. They're also hella confusing! Where do they fit in? Between moisturising, applying face masks and watching Gilmore Girl reruns are they really worth it? Read on to learn more and as always, let us know if you have any other questions.

Best Oil On The Market! Great face oil. I first bought the trio pack to test it. My skin glowed and looked so much more healthy. Now I use the routine religiously. It’s the best and the price point is very affordable and it lasts months!

Have a question?

Face oils are a fantastic addition to any face routine. It might seem obvious that dry skin is definitely a candidate for face oil but you can also benefit from using it if your skin is naturally more oily. While this might seem counterintuitive, over-washing our skin without moisturising effectively can actually strip skin of its natural oils and in turn cause overproduction of oil. Therefore both oily and dry skin types need regular and high quality hydration to be as healthy as possible. Face oils provide an added layer of hydration and nutrients on top of your moisturiser.

For oily skin types prone to hormonal breakouts we recommend the Hormone Hero Face Oil and for all other dry or combination skin types we recommend the Super Soother Face Oil.

Yes, you can. You should use your face oil after moisturising as the face oil acts as a final occlusive layer which locks in the moisture you apply to your skin and acts as a defense against harsh environmental and lifestyle factors. Alternatively you might prefer to use a moisturiser in the day and just a face oil at night before bed.

This will depend on your individual skin type. For oily or acne-prone skin, lighter weight carrier oils that don’t block pores are ideal; for example jojoba, sweet almond and grapeseed oil. Even for dry or mature skin, the delicate face area still appreciates high quality and lighter weight carrier oils but it’s best when these are mixed with richer hydrators like argan, apricot kernel, or rosehip oil. The Hormone Hero Face Oil is packed with lighter weight oils like jojoba and grapeseed oil making it perfect for oily skin types, while our Super Soother Face Oil is more of a deep hydrator starring rosehip and apricot kernel. Generally speaking we would recommend avoiding any heavy or pore clogging oil on the delicate facial skin. This includes richer carrier oils like coconut oil and sesame oil. While these make fantastic hydrators for the body, they can lead to breakouts for some skin types on the face.

Face oils are first and foremost used to hydrate and deeply nourish the skin. They also help to balance your skin's oil production and to lock in moisture. With face oils we recommend choosing one that is made for your skin type. Using face oil as part of your daily skincare ritual can help improve the overall health of the skin.
